Family Values: Used 2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot Buyers Guide

Family Values: Used 2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot Buyers Guide

A used Honda Pilot is the ideal SUV for people who don’t need to climb up the side of a mountain, plod through a desert, or tow an airplane. The real world can be just as challenging, with its endless potholes, deadlines and robo-calls about your student loans and/or home alarm system. This 3 row crossover from Honda is designed to make moving you and your family from place to place a little bit easier. Sure it can’t stop telemarketers from bugging you or get you an extension on that all-important work deadline. But at least you can buy a slightly used Honda Pilot from Off Lease Only, and protect your wallet from the depreciation of buying it new. So let’s take a look at a Honda Pilot real-world buyers guide, and see what makes it such a strong family value.

2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot Buyers Guide

Let’s start by saying that not everyone who buys a used Honda Pilot has a screaming toddler in each arm, or a brood of brooding teenagers to figure out. These three row crossovers are fantastic, no matter what stage of life you’re in. They can haul people and stuff. Tow even more stuff. And a used Honda Pilot AWD can get you and your stuff to out of the way places. Through snow, mud and all sorts of terrain. The 2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot is the third generation of this popular sport utility vehicle, and it has a number of features that are designed to make your travels a lot easier. But more on that in a minute. Let’s talk about the value part of this equation first.

A brand-new 2020 Honda Pilot LX (i.e. the base model) with front-wheel-drive starts around $32,000. Adding all-wheel-drive will set you back another $2,000. If you want a few niceties like keyless entry, Honda Lane Watch blind spot monitoring system, leather and a sunroof, you’ll have to upgrade to the $38,000 Honda Pilot EX-L. $40k if you want it with all-wheel-drive. However, a slightly used 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD from Off Lease Only will only set you back around $25,000. A used 2017 or 2018 Honda Pilot won’t cost you much more than that. And most of our vehicles have really low miles and the balance of the original factory warranty too. So why suffer the depreciation of buying new?

If you’ve Googled “2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019 Honda Pilot for sale near me”, then you already know that there is only one engine available; the Honda 3.5L Earth Dreams V6. Believe it or not, Honda is the largest engine manufacturer in the world, and this V6 is truly a gem. There’s 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque under your right foot. And since there’s no turbos to spool up, the power delivery is instantaneous. This engine is also extremely smooth, and it can launch this three row crossover to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds. That’s on par with most muscle cars from the 1960s. Yet it can still manage an impressive 18 city / 26 hwy / 21 combined with FWD. A used Honda Pilot AWD returns 19/27/22. Opting for the Honda Pilot Touring with the 9 speed automatic will get you 19/26/22 with all-wheel-drive and 20/27/23 with front-wheel-drive.

2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot Trim Levels

The Honda Pilot was updated in 2019 to include more standard equipment across the board. But we’ll cover that one separately. On all year-models you have a choice of 8 passenger seating with the second row bench, or 7 passengers with the captains chairs. The second and third row seats are elevated slightly to give the rear passengers a better view of the road. There is plenty of room in all three rows to actually carry adults. However, with all three rows in use, there won’t be a whole lot of cargo room in the back. Folding the back two rows of seats into the floor will reveal an impressive 83.9 ft. of room. There’s also plenty of cup holders and storage nooks for you to lose stuff in.

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the equipment you get by model:

Used 2016 – 2018 Honda Pilot LX: This Honda Pilot base model gets power everything, active noise cancellation, a 5 inch touchscreen, and 18 inch wheels.

Used 2016 – 2018 Honda Pilot EX: In addition to the equipment listed above, this model adds automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights, keyless ignition and entry, remote engine start, the Honda Lane watch blind spot camera system, an upgraded backup camera with guidelines, three zone climate control, a power driver seat, an upgraded audio system with an 8 inch touchscreen, extra USB ports, and the traction control system gets a snow mode in FWD models and snow/sand/mud programs for the Honda Pilot AWD system.

A note about the all-wheel-drive system: The Honda Pilot AWD system can route up to 70% of the engine power to the rear axle, then shuffle up to 100% of that power to the left or right rear wheel (which ever one that has the most traction). The snow/sand/mud modes adjust how much the traction control system kicks in, and how much power should be sent to the rear wheels. The 2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot also has 7.3 inches of ground clearance, which is pretty good for a vehicle of this type.

Used 2016 – 2018 Honda Pilot EX-L: In addition to the equipment listed above, the EX-L trim level gets leather, heated front seats, a sunroof, and a power tailgate.

Honda Sensing: This advanced safety system suite includes automatic emergency breaking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. Prior to 2019, this package was optional on the Honda Pilot EX, EX-L optional on other models.

There was also a rear-seat entertainment option that included fold-down rear screen, with additional USB ports from the second row, HDMI and RCA ports and a 115 V household power outlet.

2019 Honda Pilot Changes

Starting with the 2019 model year, the Honda Sensing safety systems now comes standard on all models. There was also a new front and rear fascia, along with standard LED headlights. The 2019 Honda Pilot EX and models above now come with a new infotainment system that includes Apple Car Play and Android Auto. There’s also a new feature called Cabin Talk that allows you to speak to the rear passengers through the audio system speakers or headphones. And you can get another feature called Cabin Control that allows you to change things like the climate control and audio settings via a smartphone app (the kids should have fun torturing you with that one).

2016 – 2019 Honda Pilot Tow Rating

The Honda Pilot FWD can tow 3,500 pounds. Step up to the AWD model, and the total capacity will increase to 5,000 pounds.

The cargo floor behind the third row can be lowered to increase capacity, or you can store stuff beneath it. The floor panel itself has carpet on one side and textured plastic on the other side, in case you want to load muddy soccer cleats or other dirty stuff.

There is a small plastic barrier between the open and lock/unlock button for the rear hatch, just above the license plate. That way you can feel which button you’re about to press.
