Everything you need to know about buying a used 2016 – 2019 Dodge Challenger SXT

First introduced for the 2008 model year, the Dodge Challenger SXT rides on a revised Mercedes platform (they used to own Chrysler back in the day) that is shared with other models like the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. It was updated for the 2015 model year, and remains largely unchanged through the 2019 model year. These changes included revised front and rear fascias, a new gauge cluster, and a high-sill center console that’s reminiscent of the one used in the 1971 Dodge Challenger. Other changes included the addition of optional blind spot monitoring and forward collision warning.

Like we said before, if you Google say; a 2018 Dodge Challenger SXT for sale in Miami, you’re going to see a bunch of them. These cars start new at $28,000 before options, and can quickly escalate to the mid-$30,000 range. But Off Lease Only has them starting at just $20,000. And that’s with low miles and the balance of the original factory warranty (in most cases). The reason this comes up now, is because at that price, you’ll have plenty of money left over to upgrade the performance or appearance as you like. So let’s look at what kind of equipment you’ll get to start with.

Used 2016 – 2019 Dodge Challenger SXT Performance

The Dodge Challenger V6 is powered by the Pentastar 3.6L VVT (variable valve timing) V6 engine. You can get this motor in other Mopar products like the Chrysler Pacifica and the Dodge Charger. But in this application, it gets high-flow intake and exhaust ports, which allow it to make 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired with a ZF designed 8-speed automatic transmission (no manual is available in this trim level), and rear wheel drive is the only option. If you want a Dodge Challenger AWD, then you’ll have to spring for a used Dodge Challenger GT (we have those starting around $26,000). It’s going to be equipped similar to the Challenger SXT, and the Dodge 3.6L V6 is your only engine choice.

In stock form, a used Dodge Challenger V6 can hit 60 mph in a shade over 6 seconds.

To put that into perspective, a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A took 7.1 seconds to reach 60 mph. And only the 426 Hemi and 440 powered 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T could break the six second barrier back then. So a used 2016 – 2019 Dodge Challenger SXT V6 does have genuine muscle car cred. And with all the money you could save buying one from Off Lease Only, you could afford to upgrade the performance with any of the numerous hi-performance parts that are available on the market today.

Used 2016 – 2019 Dodge Challenger SXT Features

Although this is the entry-level model, a used Dodge Challenger SXT comes very well-equipped. Standard equipment includes 18-inch wheels, power everything, dual zone climate control, keyless entry with pushbutton start, a leather wrapped steering wheel, power driver seat, 60/40 folding rear seats, a backup camera, and Apple Car Play /Android Auto.

A used Dodge Challenger SXT Plus gets all of the equipment listed above, in addition to 20-inch wheels, performance brakes, 3.07 rear axle ratio, fog lamps, a 276 watt amplifier with six upgraded speakers, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, heated Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting in the door panels, aluminum pedals and parking sensors.

There were a number of option packages (like the Challenger Blacktop and Challenger Super Track Pak) that added additional features, wheels etc. The content and availability depended on the model year.

Used 2016 – 2019 Dodge Challenger SXT Hidden Features

There is a silhouette of a Dodge Challenger in the bottom edge of the front windshield on the driver’s side. There’s another Easter egg under the center console lid, where a vintage Dodge Brothers logo is embossed into the plastic. Brothers John and Horace Dodge officially started their car company back in 1914. It was eventually sold to Walter P Chrysler in 1928, and is now owned by the Italian automaker Fiat. Ironically, development of the current Dodge Challenger was started back when Mercedes owned the company, and it shares its basic architecture with an old Mercedes E Class.

In the navigation system (if equipped), you can change the current position icon displayed on the map to a Dodge Viper, Dodge Charger, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Jeep Wrangler, a Chrysler 200, or Chrysler 300. Not every used Dodge Challenger SXT is equipped with navigation. But if the one that you buy is, you can check this out for yourself by going to Settings> Map Setup> Vehicle Icon

There are two button clusters hidden on the very back of the steering wheel, behind the spokes at the 9 & 3 position. The rocker switch on the right controls the volume, and the little round button in the middle changes the audio source. The rocker switch on the left-hand side controls the radio seek function, and the button in the middle will allow you to change through your radio presets. If the audio system is in Media mode, the top of the rocker switch will allow you to skip to the next audio track. The lower portion of the rocker switch will let you restart the current audio track, or go back to the previous track.
