Old-School Luxury for the 21st Century: 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80

The 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 is a fullsize luxury SUV along the same lines as a Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes GL or a Range Rover. Of course, the only LuxUV on this list to rival the big Q-ship’s off-road capability is the Range Rover. But 97% of buyers will probably never take this mobile luxury condo out into the wilderness to go ‘glamping’. Which is a shame, because a 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 4×4 could drive up the side of a mountain without breaking a sweat.

Who makes the Infiniti QX80?

The 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 is based on the Nissan Armada / Nissan Patrol, and each are the respective brand’s flagship SUV. The main differences between the 2018-2019 Nissan Armada and the 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 have to do with accoutrements and the mechanicals. The Infiniti QX80 gets a comfort oriented suspension to iron out the bumps, and the optional Hydraulic Body Motion Control shocks (i.e. active suspension) helps to further improve ride quality and mitigate bodyroll in turns. Under the hood, the 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 makes 400-hp and 413 lb-ft from its 5.6L V8, while the Armada has to make due with “just” 390-hp and 394 lb-ft. The performance edge goes to the Infiniti, which can gird its loins and charge to 60 mph in a mere 5.9 seconds. To put that into perspective, 5.9 ticks to 60 is faster than a 1970 Corvette 427, a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO, or a 1976 Lamborghini Countach. And none of those could seat up to 7 people, or tow up to 8,500 lbs.

As far as accouterments go, the 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 bests the Armada again, with less hard plastic surfaces, soft stitched cow hides cover almost everywhere you see or touch, and this big Brownstone has some of the most gorgeous wood trim you’ll ever see. It might lack some of the tech novelties that other LuxUVs in this segment have. But it’s so nice, you won’t miss anything.

Where is the 2018-2019 Infiniti QX80 made?
